Great post. With the help of some others, we created a trading edge based on POMO days. It has largely evaporated now (along with the $300 B reserve for Treasury QE); however, through June, there was typically a paint the tape close on POMO days, followed by a down day.

    I excerpted you here: http://www.precisioncapmgt.com/2009/09/01/fed-c...

I trade in 3 stock exchanges and every move in all 3 exchanges round the clock is directed by PPT

I may be wrong but my 43 years trading experience is PPT is active round the clock for atleast last 2 years

Thanks for the great article. I wonder what types of "PPT Detection" systems have been devised to trigger alerts to this type of activity. Another question is why PPT appears to happen mostly during the daytime session and not at night.
  • There are algorithms with gaming and anti-gaming technology that prowl bid/ask spreads and dark pools. We know they are able to detect upcoming volume surges before it appears on the tape and react accordingly. That's the problem with HFT artificially churning the market. When they decide to step aside what was thought to be liquidity disappears instantly. The NYSE has lost 80% of their specialist over the last two years. Firms don't exist anymore to take both sides of those trades.

As retail traders one of the detection methods is simple chart reading, using alerts, and resting bids. The setup in our Gaming Auction Days story on TBT/TLT is pretty consistent. Just like the move in AIG where a PPT push breaks an HFT churn. Watch for volume expansion breakouts from tight ranges.

There is a strong case for PPT intervention in the futures markets. Much of the rally came from futures being jammed overnight between the lunchtime close in Tokyo to the New York open. This created sideways garbage during regular intraday NYSE hours. Gross manipulation is going on there. Who what and how is something for another story.
